SACO ME: Thornton Academy
(10-0) came back from behind twice to upend Windham
(7-3) 35-28.
Thornton took the early
6-0 lead on a first quarter touchdown by Zach Sheehan
but the kick Failed.
Windham scored the next 14
points on a six yard run by Jack Mallis and a 14 yard
run by David Ingraham to take a 14-6 lead into the half.
The turning point in the
game may been late in the first half after Thornton QB
Steve Trask threw an interception and was injured on the
return. Windham was obviously executing the defensive
game plan of neutralizing Trask.
John Trull took over in
the second half and did what Trask had been unable to
do. Move the ball. Trull threw the ball often, going 6
for 7 leading Thornton to four second half touchdowns.
Trull led the Trojans on a
61 yard scoring drive capped by Remmes 3 yard plunge to
cut Windham's lead to 14-12.
Windham responded when
Jack Mallis scored on a 29 yard scamper to make it
21-14. It was Mallis's second of three touchdowns on the
day.
Thornton got a huge lift
on the kick off when Biddeford transfer Tim Grose
returned the kickoff 84 yards to close the gap to 21-19.
Thornton held Windham on
the next drive and Trull and Grose connected on another
big play, this time converting a 4th down. Thornton took
the lead when Dimitri Skinsacos recovered a Zach Sheehan
fumble in the Windham end zone. Trull hit Grose for the
2 point conversion to put Thornton up 27-21.
Windham wasn't done yet.
Mallis ripped off a 45 yard run that put Windham ahead
28-27 with 8:54 left in regulation.
Thornton had one more
drive left in them and took the lead on a five yard
touchdown run by Remmes. Trull converted another 2 point
conversion, this time on a pass to Smith.
